Petit Verdot is one of the six grape varieties used in red Bordeaux wines. As part of a blend, Petit Verdot adds a spicy character to the wine. As a standalone varietal, the grape produces wine that is dark in color, and rich in red and black fruit aromas with firm tannins.
Villa San Juliette Vineyard contains a gravelly mix of shale and calcareous soils rich in lime and chalk, with rocky formations along its rolling hills. This combined with huge diurnal temperature variation¾from hot days to cool nights¾allows fruit to ripen to its fullest potential.
2016 saw more rainfall than in the previous five years, bringing some relief to an ongoing drought. Temperatures on average were warm, producing grapes that were fully ripe with above-average crop size.
