The Grape

Malbec, a grape inky in color with robust tannins, also is one of the six grapes allowed in red Bordeaux wines. Found mainly in Southern France and Argentina, Malbec makes for wines that are dark in color and express plump, juicy fruit aromas and flavors.

The Land

The Malbec comes from Amber Knolls Vineyard, which is 2,000 feet in elevation. The volcanic soils here were laid down by Mount Konocti and are very porous with abundant obsidian stones that allow for ample drainage. Wines on volcanic soils take on savory, umami, graphite-like character as they develop over time.

The Season

2016 saw more rainfall than in the previous five years, bringing some relief to an ongoing drought. Temperatures on average were warm, producing grapes that were fully ripe with above-average crop size.
