2013 GSM

The Grenache and Syrah contribute to a nose and palate dominated by aromas of wild strawberry, ripe cherry and baking spice.  The Mourvèdre provides “meaty” and savory aromas.  Underlying notes of dark cocoa, white pepper and licorice are also hinted at in the classic Rhone inspired blend. The fresh acidity and smooth texture yield a clean finish both rich and fruity.

GSM is a rich blending of fat fruity Grenache, noble Old-World Syrah and strong velvety Mourvèdre.  By taking the best of each and enhancing through thoughtful blending, GSM results in a delicious Rhone-style red wine.

Grenache is hand harvested from the rolling hills of Pear Valley Vineyard. An irrigated, south facing 115 acres produce vigorous and hardy vines. Vibrant fruit nourished by ancient soils under ideal climate conditions while leaving little impact on the environment is the impetus of Pear Valley.

Syrah comes from La Vista Vineyard, situated at 1600 – 1950 feet above sea level and halfway between the chilly Pacific coast and downtown Paso Robles. Developed between 2007 and 2010, it now has six acres of Syrah clone 470E planted on 420A rootstock that are trained in the vertical shoot position. The steep slopes engender Syrah wines with captivating aromatics, intense flavors and ample structure.

Mourvèdre grapes are grown at Sandy Lane Vineyard, overlooking the delta near the town of Oakley and less than 20 miles from downtown Concord. Called “the oldest inter-planted vineyard in California,” it was inter-planted with Mourvèdre (aka Mataró), Zinfandel and Carignan in the early part of the 20th century on St George rootstock. These ancient head-trained, spur-pruned vines benefit from the cooling effects of the water and are dry farmed in soils that are as sandy as Waikiki Beach.
