2012 Merlot, Paso Robles

This wine conjures impressions of the first opportunity to work in the garden after a long winter — clean, crisp air and the telltale smell of soil that hasn’t been tilled in months. It has red plum and cherry on the nose with undertones of campfire smoke, sagebrush and moist earth. The palate shows black cherry up front; smoked game, cocoa and vanilla at the core; and a sustained finish of black cherry, toasted oak and fresh mushroom. Dusty, integrated tannins and bright acidity compose the structure while the tactile perceptions reveal a slightly grainy texture and broad mouthfeel.

Overview

Fruit was sourced from two properties in the El Pomar district of the Paso Robles AVA. Twenty miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, Paso Robles experiences warm, dry summers with occasional heat spikes. El Pomar is located east and down wind of the Templeton Gap, a break in the coastal range that allows a marine layer to penetrate interior vineyards and provide the cool evenings and nights that help develop beneficial grape acidity.

PMR Vineyards was developed in 1999 on the rolling hills of Paso’s El Pomar district, and now consists of 35 sustainably farmed acres. Vines are carefully tended by hand in heavy clay soils through winter pruning, summer shoot and cluster thinning, and fall harvest. The site produces medium bodied red wines that strike an exemplary balance of structure, aroma, flavor and mouthfeel.

Twin Oaks Vineyard is defined by the signature characteristics of the El Pomar district: rolling hills, heavy clay soils, and a climate that is highlighted by the arrival of a cooling marine layer nearly every afternoon. The vineyard produces wines with flavorful expressions of true varietal character.
