2012 Incantation Blanc, Monterey

Double Gold, Best of Class winner!

A complex nose of orange zest, grapefruit, lemon, sage brush, grass and wet stones is positioned at center stage before a top-billed palate of spicy orange, lemon, minerals and dried gardenia steals the show. The finish is long and clean with bright acidity, honeydew and more orange components.

Incantation Blanc is an off-dry Rhône-style white wine blend that may be served slightly chilled or even over ice. This light-bodied wine is intended for popular enjoyment during informal seasonal gatherings or casual sipping with everyday meals. Winemaker George Troquato employed a simple fermentation to achieve a fun, accessible wine that is free of the toasted oak components, heavy viscosity, and higher alcohols associated with most barrel-aged white wines.

Fruit was sourced from Sunset Vineyard in Hames Valley, a sub-region of the Monterey AVA that is situated at the southern end of Monterey County. The vineyard offers a unique combination of growing conditions including rocky shale soils, elevations of 600–800 feet, and a climate that is warmer and dryer than the nearby San Miguel district of Paso Robles.

The distinctly flavored orange muscat (among the many muscats grown worldwide, but one that is popular in California and Australia) was blended with viognier and grenache blanc, two grapes made famous in the Rhône region of France. Orange Muscat frames the blend with citrus components; the viognier contributes floral notes; and the grenache blanc adds mouthfeel and minerality.
