2011 Sorcerer's Stone, California

With vestiges of fresh pine and fireplace smoke filling the air, the ambiance of a rustic mountain cabin is captured in every bottle of this zinfandel blend. A bright nose of raspberry, cherry, menthol, dried fruit, and bay leaf makes a strong opening statement while morsels of blackberry pie, brambleberry, herbs, vanilla and jasmine tea strike powerful notes on the plush palate in conjunction with bright acidity. Age three to five years.

Overview

Boasting a solid foundation of elegant zinfandel from Paso Robles, the 2011 Sorcerer’s Stone is a hearty blend that was fortified with small contributions of petite sirah from Solana Vineyards in Paso Robles and teroldego from Mistral Vineyards in the San Ysidro district of Santa Clara Valley. The petite sirah adds richness, black fruit and black pepper while teroldego — the “big personality” grape from Northern Italy — provides earth, acidity and minerality to the finished wine.

The zinfandel was harvested from Kiler Grove Winegrowers, a vineyard situated on a knob in southwest Paso Robles. With warm-to-hot sunny days, the site is exposed to cool nights from 1,200-foot elevations and stiff afternoon winds resulting from its close proximity to a pass in the coastal range called the “Templeton Gap”. The lean calcareous soils promote deep fruit flavors while overnight plunges of 40-plus degrees insure the development of ideal wine acidity.
