2011 Mercury Rising, California

A high percentage of cabernet sauvignon, a cool growing season, and the sourcing of fruit from Sonoma County conspire to create the perfect storm of winemaking and instill a sense of complete satisfaction. It opens with generous blackberry aromas and an underlying layer of blueberry that cushions the nose in conjunction with wisps of dried cranberry, vanilla, star jasmine, rosemary and campfire smoke. The palate reveals dense black cherry, elevated raspberry, grilled game, and chicory while dusty tannins, fresh acidity, and a rich mouthfeel complement the balanced expression.

Mercury Rising, Cinnabar’s most popular wine, is a Bordeaux-style red cuvée. Vineyards are chosen for their favorable climate and soils, effective cultural practices, and history of producing quality fruit. In 2011, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec were sourced from Sonoma County (Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley), the Red Hills of Lake County, the Clements Hills above Lodi, and Paso Robles.

The varietal blend of Mercury Rising is fine-tuned with each vintage based on the character of the individual components and how they contribute to the synergy of aroma, flavor, structure and mouthfeel. Lots are fermented and aged separately, then blended to create a dark, complex and elegant wine.
