2010 Zinfandel, Paso Robles

This wine exemplifies the qualities of a classic zinfandel. Unforgettable aromas of dried cranberry, lavender, vanilla and subtle rose petal are followed by a burst of blackberry, cassis and peppercorn spice with a long silky finish on the palate.

The exact origins of zinfandel are unclear, but DNA research traces its ancestry to Croatia and Italy, respectively the crljenak kastelanski and primitivo grapes. Wine historians believe vine cuttings were transported from Eastern Europe to the United States in the 1820s, and the grape was called “zinfandel” by the time it gained popularity during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s.

Cinnabar sourced zinfandel fruit from Kiler Grove Winegrowers, a vineyard situated on a knob in southwest Paso Robles. With warm-to-hot sunny days, the site is exposed to cool nights from 1,200-foot elevations and stiff afternoon winds resulting from its close proximity to a pass in the coastal range called the “Templeton Gap”. Temperature plunges of 40-plus degrees insure the development of ideal wine acidity.

The signature pale calcareous soils of Westside Paso provide excellent drainage and exert a profound effect on zinfandel vines. The high calcium content induces benefi cial stress that generates natural vigor control and low crop yields, enabling vines to deliver dark colors and true varietal character in the fi nished wines.
